Good morning everyone and welcome to a brand new season full of promise, potential and the odd hiccup or two, yes rugby is back with us and I do hope you all had a great summer especially during that hot spell which seems such a long time ago. Of course it isn’t the start of a new season for the Chiefs just yet, they still have another week off before their season gets underway. Their first game will be here at Pottington road on the 14th September against Bracknell, kick off is 2.30pm. We do have for you though a great game in prospect today as Barnstaple Athletic takes to the field against a visiting Launceston 2nd XV. Kick off is 2.30pm.
But before we get into that how do like the new look website, any thoughts, ideas or problems you have noticed just let me know and we’ll see what we can do. Thanks must go to Graham Harris of Boom Boom Media for putting this together and getting me up to speed on how to actually use it. Also anything you want to say about the blog post just leave a comment below and of course don’t forget to share this post by clicking the share buttons at the end of this post, every little helps.
Now on to the news for the week and Ladies day is early this season, in fact it is just 3 weeks away on the 28th September. There’s a 3 course meal and fantastic game of rugby as the Chiefs take on the Cornishmen of Camborne and all the usual fun and games you ladies are used to. For more details and to book your table contact Jacqui Edwards behind the bar or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org . Christmas dinner will be on the 7th December this year and we will let you know more details as and when we get them, so make sure you keep that day free in your diary.
Also its World Cup year which kicks off on Friday September 20th and Barnstaple rugby club has a fantastic treat in store for you for the England games. Enjoy a fantastic breakfast when you come down to the club to watch the England group games (except the Thursday match against USA on 26th September) from our fantastic caterers Elite catering. You should all have heard of the rave reviews from the juniors who already sampled Lee’s breakfasts on a Sunday last season, so don’t miss this chance to enjoy some great food while watching England demolish whatever the opposition is put in front of them this coming Autumn.
And the Lottery is back up and running with a winning pot of
£1818 up for grabs so don’t forget to grab yourself a ticket just £1 from
behind the bar. This Sunday the draw will be taking place at the Corner House
between 1.30 and 2pm so if you want to see how it all happens get yourself down
there for a pint.
Today though is all about Barnstaple Athletic as they finish their preparations for the new season with a friendly against Launceston 2nd XV. The Tic’s nearly got there last season but unfortunately lost their last game to the eventual Devon Merit 1 winners Okehampton by just three points 27-24. A very close run season and the closest season I can remember with 5 teams pitching for the top spot with as little as 5 points seperating them all, even as late as the end of February. Head coach Scott Warren is definitely aiming to go one better this season and what better way to prepare than today’s game.

Barnstaple Colt’s were due to visit Bideford Colts for their game today but that was called off as Bideford were unable to raise a team due to commitments from some of their players so next time hopefully.
That’s about it for Barum today but it is the first game of the season for everyone else in the South West Premier and it’s no good me trying to see who will do what today as we have no idea how the teams will start the season, but here are some highlights.
First on the list is how well Okehampton will start in their first ever game at this level. Today they travel to Brixham for what will also be their first Devon derby of the season, boy what an introduction to tier 5. Then of course there is Launceston who travel to Exeter Uni for their return to tier 5. And to cap it off there is another Devon derby involving Exmouth at home to Ivybridge and this one will be interesting to see how strong both these teams will be over the coming weeks. Finally It will be interesting to watch how Maidenhead start the new season to see how much stronger, if at all, they have made their squad and what sort of challenge they will pose as they travel to Drybrook.
That’s a wrap from me for now and make sure you get a chance to watch some 2nd’s rugby today just to get you into the mood for next week.
