Good evening folks and yes the fixtures are out for the up and coming season and there is a lot of exciting games ahead for 2024/25. This blog is going to take a quick look at what we have coming up just to get you mouth-watering with the season now just a mere 85 days away. We have a full calander of rugby for you with Athletic now at level 7 in Counties 1, except for the reserve days where none of the teams are playing unless there has been a postponement, there will be a Chiefs or Athletic match every Saturday.

We only have the Chiefs and Athletics games on the website at present and if you click this link home games you can see all the Chiefs and Athletic fixtures at Pottington Road.

We will start as ever with the Chiefs, Their fixtures are here, Chiefs fixtures 2024/25 and in a reverse of last season’s opening two weeks play their first two games on the Road, at St. Austell and then Brixham, who will again be Ttough opposition and one of the teams that will challenge the Chiefs for that top spot. Their first home game on 21st September against the other challenge to the Chiefs winning the league, Chew Valley, and what a game that one will be.

Another big home game will be against Ivybridge on 12th October as it is Oktoberfest at Barnstaple Rugby club, woth plenty of drink, food and music to keep you going all day and night.

There are three new teams in the league following Devonports acent to National league rugby and both WSM and Okehampton being relegated. we welcome Royal Wootton Bassett and Sidmouth to Regional one southwest after they both won their respective Regional 2 leagues

Marlborough who join us have been moved sideways from Regional 1 South Central. Of course Sidmouth we all know and I can’t wait until the folk festival gets under way there in August, will be a little compensation for losing two Devon teams to face this season. he other two will be much longer journeys with RW Bassett just off the M4 about 5 miles from Swindon town centre and Marlborough only 15 miles away south of Swindon.

It looks to be a very promising season for the Chiefs and if they can hit the ground running and produce the kind of rugby we know they are capable of a very successful one as well.

As for Athletic it is unknown territory this season following promotion to Counties 1 Western West with just Tavistock the only team the Tic’s have played in competitive rugby before. Athletic begin their season with two home games, which is just the start they needed, against Pirate amateurs and then the following week they take on Tavistock, who you will remember, the Tic’s had the massive title struggle with two seasons ago with Tavi just pipping them to promotion at the death.

The big game though will be the local derby against Bideford Chiefs and boy what a game that will be as there hasn’t been a competitive league game of rugby between Barnstaple and Bideford since way back in the mists of time, just the boxing day derbies as we all know and will definitely be a highlight for Athletic. That game is on the 9th November, just after bonfire night, so another explosive day in store.

Other teams in this league also include Penryn, Bude, St Ives, Newquay and Redruth II from Cornwall as well as the likes of Kingsbridge and Plymstock Albion Oaks. So an exciting season for the Tic’s but also a difficult one which they will need to get the feel of right from the outset as they battle against some better quality teams than last season. The bonus of competing at home for the opening two weekends though cannot be underestimated and should help settle any season nerves. You can find all of their fixtures here Athletic Fixtures 2024/25.

So there you have it folks a great year of rugby not far away and I will catch with you all when I have some further news, especially when the details of the Barum Fest are made available. It will be on 13th July anything else and I will let you know immediately.
